PVR testing consists of a sensitive electronic device which accurately measures the blood flow through the vessels in arms, legs, fingers, toes, and head. It reveals the presence of hardening of the arteries at very early stages which could be missed by other methods. Even impaired blood flow through the capillaries (the tiniest blood vessels) can be demonstrated with this device.
PVR is so sensitive it visually records the impairment in blood flow caused by a single puff from a cigarette, since nicotine in a sensitive person produces spasm of blood vessels. This evidence has helped many patients decide to give up smoking.
Vasospasm is studied for other reasons as well. As an example, we find people who always have cold hands and feet are living in a constant state of “spasms of the vessels.” Frequently, this problem can be related to nutritional problems, chronic emotional stress, toxins, and even food and chemical sensitivities. Vasospasm is another way the body reacts to conditions which are harmful to it, and chronic vasospasm may lead to high blood pressure, heart attacks, arteriosclerosis and kidney failure. Some experts believe that more information is obtained with this study then from your ECG. The response to any treatment is graphically clear, so you can follow it yourself on the PVR.
