Antimaligin Antibody in Serum (AMAS)

The AMAS test measures the body’s level of antibody to Malignin, a hormone which has been found to be present in most cancerous cells, regardless of the type of cell or it’s location. Unlike tests like the Cancer Embryonic Antigen (CEA), the AMAS measures a well-defined antibody whose serum levels rise early in the course of the disease. In some cases, the AMAS test has been positive as early as 18 months before clinical detection of the process. On the other hand, since antibody failure often occurs late in malignancy, elevated antibody is then no longer available as evidence of the presence of the antigen. Therefore, late in the disease, the AMAS test cannot be used as a diagnostic tool, but may still be useful for monitoring the progression of the disease process.
